Sleep 'n' Beauty

There are many articles that talk about the importance of getting enough sleep. And since sleep is linked to overall body health perhaps we need to be reminded, occasionally, that this includes skin health as well.

Research conducted by The US National Library of Medicine shows that those who have a good night sleep enjoy better-looking skin. "This study indicates that chronic poor sleep quality is associated with increased signs of intrinsic aging, diminished skin barrier function and lower satisfaction with appearance.”¹ We are all too familiar with the term “beauty sleep,” which means the amount of sleep needed for a person to look good when he or she gets up in the morning². But a beauty sleep goes beyond just looking good. Science proves that this natural periodic suspension of consciousness³ we call sleep actually has powerful skin restorative abilities. “Skimp on shut-eye and your skin will look dull. When you're tired, blood doesn't flow efficiently,"says Michael Breus, MD, author of Beauty Sleep. On the nights that I get at least 7 hours of sleep, I wake up energized and I don’t only feel good, but my face also shows it.

By getting enough sleep, you are taking care of God’s temple (your body). And by doing so, you are proving that you care enough to make sure it looks, feels, and functions good enough for it to be used by Him. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” -1 Corinthians 16:19-20 NIV

In the end, beauty eventually fades, but those who intentionally get a good restful sleep demonstrate a reverence to (fear of) God that says they want to be able to honor him physically, emotionally, and most important spiritually. "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30 NIV
